The Rolex Sea-Dweller is a famous Submariner series watch, the most important and notable thing is that it’s stepped up with specifications and size as well. The Submariner is definitely a capable divers’ watch with versatility but as seen majority timepieces owned actually may not go through any diving activity. The Sea-Dweller timepiece by Rolex is also one dedicated extreme divers’ watch.
 
At the launch of the Sea-Dweller series in 1967, it was a part of the Submariner line. The Sea-Dweller was able to hit extreme depths of 610-meters as compared to today’s Submariner with a humble 200m water-resistance at the time. The Sea-Dweller had a helium escape valve, a unit designed to bear underwater high-pressure. At the time it was one of the first watches to offer such a deep-diving characteristic along with another manufacturer named Doxa watches.
 
Although it usually presented strong charms to even non-diver consumers, the Sea-Dweller was developed specifically for extreme diving applications. In that era numerous groups were experimenting with saturation diving sport and having a suitable working watch was a necessity at the time. The issue with the Sea-Dweller was to resolve its helium escape valve busting the watch crystal. As the divers went for extreme depths, after their return to the surface helium decompressed and the molecular expansion would pop off the watch crystal. Rolex patented the design of Helium escape valve design and its extreme depth reaching capability. It was the major difference between Sea-Dweller and its sibling Submariner with lesser diving depth capability.

Valuable Terms for Rolex Sea-Dweller Collectors
Single Red: Earlier models of the Sea-Dweller range had a single lined “Sea-Dweller” text written on the dial. This is now one of the rarely found models that have made it even more valuable.
 
Double Red: After the “Single Red” model, comes the “Double Red” model that carries a double lined red text on the dial. The model is also nick-named as DRSD for “Double Red Sea-Dweller”. The lines read as Sea-Dweller in the first line and the second read as “Submariner 2000”. The number “2000” denoted the depth in feet for simple marking. Though the Single Red Rolex(s) are highly valued auction worthy timepieces but the DRSDs are also considered as a greatly valued collectors watch.
Mark Dials: The marked dials have a number marking from 0 to 7, which displays its dial variants offered by Rolex in the Sea-Dweller series. The numbers starting from 0 to 4 are original dials made by Rolex hence obtaining more value than other counterparts. The numbers marked from 5 to 7 display the Rolex replacement dials, but still hold their value as classic timepieces.
 
Rail Dial: This term needs a close inspection to identify its model mark. There are two lines which read as “Superlative Chronometer” and in the second line it reads as “Officially Certified”. Now the technical point is to examine if the Cs of both second words are aligned then you are looking at a Mark2 Rail Dial watch. These specific models were produced by Stern Company and carry a premium price-tag due to its limited production time and rarity as the Rail Dials are different from typical configurations.
Triple Six: The Triple Six name came from the “Ref. 16660”. With the model launched many things were upgraded as the movement was even more precise and plexi-glass was replaced by sapphire crystal and a quick-set feature for date was offered in it. This model is also named as a beginning of the new generation of Sea-Dweller series.
 
Patent-Pending: In the perspective of Rolex Sea –Dwellers the models with a marking of “patent pending” at the case back are pre patent models when Rolex’s helium escape valve was not patented. This marking determines the vintage rarity of the model. When the patent was approved then the case back was marked with “Rolex Patent”.
 
Great White: The Great White name comes from the changing in marking colours which became white from red. This happened with the new Ref. 1665 having a production time from 1977 till 1983 came out.
Comex: The French company that pioneered saturation diving was named “Compagnie Maritime d’Expertise”, also known as Comex. This Comex marked watch came when the French company commissioned a Rolex Sea-Dweller watch for their deep diving experiments. The Rolex marked the company name “comex” on the dial to be separated from regularly sold models. Now these models are extremely rare and few consider it to be not worn collectors’ timepieces. The commissioned watches were made in Ref. 1665 (Great White), 16600 and 16660.
Gas Escape Valve: The famous gas escape valve was patented by Rolex for its diving watches. To be specific it is a helium gas filled escape valve. The valve is used when the diver descends deep the trap helium is released by a valve to maintain the internal pressure of the watch, so it functions properly.
