Buying Any Watch As A Pro!
If you are a watch lover then you might have wondered what makes a watch tick and keep time with precision. The core of the watch is called a movement which muscles every function in the watch. The next brilliant thing to visualise is how and what are these movements made up of?
In fact these movements are made of mini-scale engineered delicate components that all together come up to become a superefficient watch movement that is a marvel in itself. These movements are the result of talented artisans who have an unequalled set of skills for the delicate work.

As the exterior watch design is essential, the type of movements used at the heart of the watch is equally important. If coming to basics there are two types of watch movements, quartz and mechanical movements. The mechanical movements have further two types, one is self-winding (automatic) and the other is hand-wound mechanical movement.
Stepping forward after how to look at the watch externally and internally we will move to the next fundamental step, that is knowing about which movement is worth spending your money. When you come to purchase a watch, do inquire what kind of movement powers the watch.

There are two most valued and commonly used movements in the watch industry, a Swiss and Japanese movement. If you are purchasing any luxury Swiss timepiece then you might generally see a Ronda or and ETA movement in the watch.  On the contrary you will find Japanese quartz movements in almost every other marque starting from entry level to many fashion and luxury watches.
Swiss movements are famous for their mechanical artistry whereas Swiss Quartz movements are a rear sight. Considering Japanese movements you can experience state of the art automatic Japanese movements in luxury Japanese watch brand and also have Japanese quartz movements easily available. The Swiss automatic movements hold its class as those are developed by time with more than a century of development and innovative evolution.

Looking at the construction materials of the watch, the most commonly used material is stainless steel that has high endurance and suitable for daily wearing. Companies tend to use various grades of stainless steel but the one with 316L grade stainless steel are much more durable and withstand the time test. Any cheaper grade of stainless steel will corrode in no time and ruin all the pleasure.
There are even more details that can be considered while purchasing a watch as what kind of crystal (glass over the dial) is used, depending on the price of the watch. Most commonly used crystal is a Mineral crystal, then comes the synthetic sapphire crystal and the high-end is natural sapphire crystal which is scratch resistant.

Few luxury brands also offer a see through case-back with a crystal installed in it. Those features are usually found in timepieces with automatic movements to flaunt its artistic mechanism.

Casio G-SHOCK GA-700CM series The Awesome Camouflage Collection!

Casio has held a top seat in producing pure adventure ready timepieces through their G-SHOCK range. The G-SHOCK series has a literal huge 300-plus models range to offer and if ladies models are excluded, then still you can choose from 292 variants within G-SHOCK range.

The robust and almost apocalypse-durable G-SHOCK has introduced camouflage models to their GA-700 series. There are about three camouflage variants in the GA-700CM range. Definitely the fascination is obvious to catch a glimpse of it. The camouflage range is military inspired which carries the authentic woodland camouflage rather than the modern digitised camouflage. Same as the other models in the G-SHOCK, this model range is also made with no aspects spared in durability, toughness and functionality. Any adventure enthusiast can rely on it for its purpose of use. The models available are GA-700CM-2A in dark blue, GA-700CM-3A in army green and GA-700CM-8A in stealth grey.

This model range is known as the analogue-digital hybrid G-SHOCK watch. As the G-SHOCK devotees know that this SHOCK-resistant range offers an analogue, digital and an analogue-digital hybrid model range. The GA-700 series’ dial design is unique and is known to have a 3D-dial design which gives a depth to the interface. Though the dial feels a bit clustered but is still appealing in an awesome way.

The GA-700 series is already a hit and admired by the majority of adventure watch enthusiasts. This collection offers reasonably priced tough functional watches that are unmatchable in durability. The watch is designed to perform several functions including, 1/100th chronograph, stopwatch, 4-daily alarms, 24-hours’ time format, world time, backlit display and 200-meters of water resistance. All these features will keep working for a long run and through any tough withering condition. The battery life on these models is rated for about ten years.

The basic time is displayed by the analogue watch hands, while other functions are displayed by parted digital display at the top and bottom of the dial. The watch is powered by the same quartz model as the GA-700 line-up. The mini-LCD at the 6 o’clock is built for negative display while only the stealth grey model has a positive display mini-LCD.

The material used for the case and wristband is resin with a utilitarian design method. As seen the case appears to be massive with loads of information out-flowing. Discussing the design in depth, Casio has done a great job with user friendly interface and designing it with prominent textured buttons around the case.
The large textured buttons are placed in a very balanced way that controls all the functions available in the watch with two on each side placement. The fifth button at the 6 o’clock is dedicated to a backlit function which is easily accessible. These buttons might be a bit hustle to reach on smaller cased G-SHOCK models, but on the GA-700 series it is easily operable.

The GA-700 range seems to lack a bit of practicality as a daily wearer due to its massive size, but the adventure focused design and construction is unparalleled. The clock hands give a feel of being clustered in the interface. Due to the limited space on the dial it the clock hands have been kept short in length. With all the complexity of the interface the backlit is pretty practical at darker places.

Bringing the discussion to a conclusion, this release might not be a massive new model addition but the unique and trendy camouflage aura has captured the G-SHOCK and it literally looks amazing. Though yet there are only three colour variants but the start is pretty appealing. As a personal preference and expectedly the most liked deal is to go with authentic woodland camouflage. The digital camouflage might be next-gen preference but the authentic army style camo is a never-no.

Looking up to the complete package with regards to design and functionality the GA-700CM collection can be a hot-favourite among the young watch enthusiasts. This watch is a literal timepiece for people on the go. All three models are reasonably priced around Rs. 25K.

We have all three models of GA-700CM series and furthermore collection of G-SHOCK at our stores. You can visit our online store and chain outlets in the city to purchase original branded watches. How to Buy a Watch like an Ace

If you have a watch or a collection of timepieces then you might have wondered what makes a watch tick and keep time with precision. The heart of the watch is called a movement which powers every function in the watch. The next wonderful thing to imagine is how and what are these movements made up of?

Few luxury brands also offer a see through case-back with a crystal installed in it. Those features are usually found in timepieces with automatic movements to flaunt its artistic mechanism.
Let us further guide you in detail about the types of movements which help you master the understanding of buying watches.

What is a Quartz Movement?
The first ever quartz powered watch was introduced in the 1960s and it has been popular since then. The quartz movement is powered by a battery that sends a precise amount of current through the quartz crystal which causes it to vibrate. The pulse generated then powers the movement. The second hand ticks once per second which keeps time with quite accurately. The most common trick to recognise a quartz movement is to watch the seconds-hand in the clock; if it jumps every second then it is a quartz movement.

The modern quartz movements have a good two to five years of battery life due to efficient power usage. These movements are durable and require low maintenance. The timekeeping efficiency of quartz movement has reached to only one second error over a year.
What is a Mechanical Movement?
The Mechanical movement is on a next level of creativity and has been around for over a century. Atypically to its quartz counterpart the mechanical movement is powered by a spiral spring that when winded, releases the kinetic energy at a controlled rate to power the movement. The mechanical movement is also known as a Calibre. The complex mechanism is designed to harness power from the tightly wound spring.

Most of the mechanical watches are hand assembled by the artisans with skilful methods. All these factors make a mechanical watch time taking to produce and limited in production numbers. As earlier described the mechanical movement has two variants one which is automatic and the other is hand-wound mechanical movement.

What is a Self Winding-Automatic Movement?
Both types of mechanical watch need energy to maintain timekeeping and other functions. In this case the self-winding-automatic movement derives its power from a spiral spring that is attached to a rotor that winds the spring when the watch is moved by natural wrist movement. The plus side to an automatic movement is if it’s worn daily then you might never need to reset the time.

What is a Power Reserve?
The important thing to understand about the automatic watches is that you need to wear these watches on regular bases. The automatic movement is designed to store power reserve in its spiral spring and even if the watch is not worn it will maintain its time for a while due to power reserve efficiency but once the power reserve ends it will stop ticking. Don’t worry it hasn’t stopped for good, you just have to wind it and re-adjust the time and you are good to go.

What is a Hand-Wound Mechanical Movement?
The hand-wound mechanical movements are a rear sight due to its need of physical work by the wearer. But there is a special kind of watch enthusiasts which love to engage with their timepieces. The manual winding action demands a separate kind of attention towards the watch because one has to manually wind the spring after a specific interval.
Solar Powered Movements

This is the newest type of movement that came later in the last century. The basic principal is based on a quartz movement but the battery is charged by a solar panel layered under the translucent dial. The solar power charges a rechargeable battery in the movement and in return powers the watch. Citizen has moved a step ahead with its ECO-Drive watches that harness power from natural and artificial light and has an astonishing power reserve from six months to 1.5 year depending on the model of the movement. With this aspect solar-powered movement virtually doesn’t need a battery change throughout its lifetime. The further magic in some solar-powered movements is that they are attached to an atomic clock over radio signals which eliminates the need of manually adjusting time.

The Latest Addition to Casio Edifice Family ECB900DB

Model: Edifice ECB900DB

Case Size: 51.5mm

Case and Bracelet Material: Stainless Steel

Crystal: Mineral Crystal

Movement: Module No. 5582

Power Reserve: 6 months on full charge

Analysis:

Edifice range from Casio has created its own strong footprint in the sense of bold and robust design language. The Edifice series models are known to be either appealing or annoying and same is with this new Edifice ECB900DB with its complex dial display and bold case design. Majority Edifice models have a complex dial display due to chronographs movements and date apertures or added digital screens that display day, power reserve or seconds counter.

The model in discussion ECB900DB also has a multi-layered display with loads of information pouring out to the wearer. Apparently it seems impossible to understand completion functions of the watch without any manual or instructions. There are two colour combinations available in this model. One colour option is red accents on black dial and a black bezel with tachymeter markings, while the other option is blue accents on a black with a blue tachymeter bezel. Both colour options have their own strong appearance, it just depends on one’s personal choice.

The dial size is just over 50mm which makes it quite enormous in appearance. Though the case is large but the size self-justifies it by the amount of functions displayed on the dial. The dial is cramped by two mini digital displays and an analogue power reserve sub-dial. Coming on the thickness of the case is just 14mm which is quite sleek for a powerful watch. The dimensions of the watch will make it look a bit bigger on the wrist and create a strong appearance.

The Movement:

The movement used is a solar powered quartz movement, Module No. 5582. Considering the functionality there is little to nothing that these high-tech hybrid watches cannot do. The watch can be paired with your mobile over Bluetooth connection and an application that controls and updates majority settings of the watch. Once the watch is connected paired with the mobile app the app determines the location and syncs the clock with the nearest atomic clock to the exact time. Furthermore the app is pre-set for 300 cities to manage day-light saving time. One might confuse this Edifice ECB900DB with Seiko Astron that has a built-in GPS. In fact both work on a separate principal to locate its location. The Seiko Astron has a built in GPS system that locates its location freely, whereas this Edifice model updates its location through a mobile app.

The watch also has a very practical chronograph function that can measure up-to 1/1000th of a second for 200-laps in a go. There is a sub-dial dedicated to display average speed of your lap time. The rugged solar powered quartz movement is capable of running for six months once fully charged and left in dark. With all the high-tech mastery the watch is 100meters water resistant. You can wear this watch fearlessly at any adventurous place.

Conclusion:

We have elaborated the watch enough for our valuable readers so that you can have a clear thought about its functionality and aesthetics. The Edifice ECB900DB is a purely functional watch with loads of looks. You can easily wear it during adventurous trips and tracking trips. Its robust design approves it to be an outstanding outdoor partner.

This watch is also suitable for frequent international travellers due to its atomic clock time syncing. You don’t need to re-adjust time as you land in any new city while the sturdy quality makes it an immensely reliable timepiece for any kind of user. The case size may set you off but the functionality makes it worth every millimetre of its size and when you consider its price-tag then you would definitely prefer it. The Edifice ECB900DB is priced just under Rs.40,000/-, which is quite reasonable when compared to other watches with the same list of functions.

A Guide to Buying Original Hamilton Watches

Welcome to another episode of our friendly guide to buying original branded watches. We are aimed to provide you with the truest possible information and a simplified guide that can help you with buying your favourite watch brand with confidence and satisfaction.

Many watch enthusiasts’ would go for a Hamilton watch for their first classy timepiece. The price range of mechanical watches starts from a very moderate price tag. This Swiss watch-maker with roots connecting to America has made a clear effort to stay in the good books of true watch collectors. Hamilton watches are fun and yet classy to wear, while offering strong character and even a brand name full of pedigree.

Voluminous watch enthusiasts’ might think that Hamilton is still a pure American watch brand but things have changed for the past many decades. For about the last five decades Hamilton has been owned by Swatch Group. Originally the Hamilton watch company was established in 1892 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, when the U.S. was considered as one of the top watch manufacturing countries in the world. The original production facility and administrative block is still in working condition in Lancaster.

Hamilton started its watch production with its self-produced movements and launched fine-quality pocket watches. The company quality standards matched the railroads requirements and later on also provided watches to military related marine chronometers, field watches and canteen watches for navy divers. On the other hand Hamilton also went for innovative ideas as it launched its first electric watch “Ventura” and its first LED watch named “Pulsar”. Later on Hamilton watches have also been starred in Hollywood and gained name in the industry.

Production of Hamilton watches ended in the U.S. by 1969 but still you can observe American heritage visible in the brand’s design language even it being a Swatch Group subsidiary. The expert watches critiques also explain it as American Art Deco inspired design philosophy. The company’s slogan “American Spirit, Swiss Precision” says it all. The Swatch Group is known for using reliable ETA movements. The Hamilton watches also entertain the latest movements with silicon parts and improved power reserves. Sapphire Crystals are also one common feature in Hamilton watches throughout the range.

Benefiting from Swatch Group’s effectiveness, Hamilton watches are powered by reliable, multi-production ETA operations, including those with new technologies such as silicon components and enhanced power savings. Common shapes such as sapphire crystal are also often used as Hamilton watches even at entry level watches.

Huge brands with multiple watch-ranges like Hamilton’s can be subcategorised in many ways. In general, Hamilton’s watch ranges are named “Khaki” with multiple variations. All the Khaki ranges serve land, sea and air purposes and are named Khaki Field, Khaki Navy and Khaki Aviation.

Considering the brand’s fashion sense it has dedicated two separate watch ranges named Jazzmaster and Broadway for the purpose. The soul of these watch ranges is explained in their name. Jazzmaster and Broadway range is more towards contemporary expression.

As we dive further into the brands range American Classic and Ventura are also two ranges with dedicated motive.  The American Classic is themed to offer re-issued models or revival of classics whereas Ventura is inclined towards abstract and unconventional designing.

Hamilton’s watch line-up has a timepiece for almost every kind of watch enthusiast even if one has an admiration for extremely unique design.
Khaki Field
The Khaki Field offers about 70 models in the range and has variants with quartz, automatic and hand-wound mechanical movements. The most commonly admired and notable model from the range is Khaki Field Mechanical with a reasonable price-tag. The Khaki Field Auto is a classy and pricey timepiece in the range.

Khaki Navy
The Khaki Navy is in-fact the divers’ watch range by Hamilton. It is based on the maritime chronometers which make great scuba and frogman watches. The Navy Scuba from the range is a daily wearer with respect to its design and reasonable sizing.
Khaki Aviation
The Khaki Aviation is a range of pilots’ watches. Few model names from the range are Pilot, Pioneer and Pilot Pioneer, the name similarity may confuse but they are different watches at all. By adding “Auto” or “Auto Chrono” further expands the model range variants.

American Classic
The American Classic range offers vintage releases and retro inspired newly modelled timepieces. This range contains funky models with LED PSR watches   to handsome intra-matic watches.
Jazzmaster
The Jazzmaster line offers Thinline and Viewmatic which are highly suitable dress watches same as Intra-Matic from American Classic range. It is offering around 150 models that can be easily called the largest range in the brand. The model variants are simply with name extensions as GMT Auto, Regulator Auto and Auto Chrono.

Broadway
The Broadway series watches are distinguished by a broad line that runs through the centre of the dial. This range also has automatic and quartz models with day-date, GMT and chronograph models.

Ventura
The Ventura range carries an unconventional triangular dial-case design. The unique design was originally introduced by industrial designer Richard Arbib in 1957. The unique watch got boosted to fame when Elvis Presley wore it on the set.

A Friendly Guide to Buy a Rolex Divers Watch

This is a friendly guide for our valued readers to assist while you buy a Rolex Divers’ watch. We will be continuing with this series of guiding articles so you have comfort in knowing what to look for when buying your favourite watch from any brand.

The Rolex Sea-Dweller is a famous Submariner series watch, the most important and notable thing is that it’s stepped up with specifications and size as well. The Submariner is definitely a capable divers’ watch with versatility but as seen majority timepieces owned actually may not go through any diving activity. The Sea-Dweller timepiece by Rolex is also one dedicated extreme divers’ watch.

At the launch of the Sea-Dweller series in 1967, it was a part of the Submariner line. The Sea-Dweller was able to hit extreme depths of 610-meters as compared to today’s Submariner with a humble 200m water-resistance at the time. The Sea-Dweller had a helium escape valve, a unit designed to bear underwater high-pressure. At the time it was one of the first watches to offer such a deep-diving characteristic along with another manufacturer named Doxa watches.

Although it usually presented strong charms to even non-diver consumers, the Sea-Dweller was developed specifically for extreme diving applications. In that era numerous groups were experimenting with saturation diving sport and having a suitable working watch was a necessity at the time. The issue with the Sea-Dweller was to resolve its helium escape valve busting the watch crystal. As the divers went for extreme depths, after their return to the surface helium decompressed and the molecular expansion would pop off the watch crystal. Rolex patented the design of Helium escape valve design and its extreme depth reaching capability. It was the major difference between Sea-Dweller and its sibling Submariner with lesser diving depth capability.

The Sea-Dweller is one obvious watch, whether you are a diver or a casual vintage watch collector. On both ends you will be highly inspired by its appeal and functionality.

Valuable Terms for Rolex Sea-Dweller Collectors
Single Red: Earlier models of the Sea-Dweller range had a single lined “Sea-Dweller” text written on the dial. This is now one of the rarely found models that have made it even more valuable.

Double Red: After the “Single Red” model, comes the “Double Red” model that carries a double lined red text on the dial. The model is also nick-named as DRSD for “Double Red Sea-Dweller”. The lines read as Sea-Dweller in the first line and the second read as “Submariner 2000”. The number “2000” denoted the depth in feet for simple marking. Though the Single Red Rolex(s) are highly valued auction worthy timepieces but the DRSDs are also considered as a greatly valued collectors watch.
Mark Dials: The marked dials have a number marking from 0 to 7, which displays its dial variants offered by Rolex in the Sea-Dweller series. The numbers starting from 0 to 4 are original dials made by Rolex hence obtaining more value than other counterparts. The numbers marked from 5 to 7 display the Rolex replacement dials, but still hold their value as classic timepieces.

Rail Dial: This term needs a close inspection to identify its model mark. There are two lines which read as “Superlative Chronometer” and in the second line it reads as “Officially Certified”. Now the technical point is to examine if the Cs of both second words are aligned then you are looking at a Mark2 Rail Dial watch. These specific models were produced by Stern Company and carry a premium price-tag due to its limited production time and rarity as the Rail Dials are different from typical configurations.
Triple Six: The Triple Six name came from the “Ref. 16660”. With the model launched many things were upgraded as the movement was even more precise and plexi-glass was replaced by sapphire crystal and a quick-set feature for date was offered in it. This model is also named as a beginning of the new generation of Sea-Dweller series.

Patent-Pending: In the perspective of Rolex Sea –Dwellers the models with a marking of “patent pending” at the case back are pre patent models when Rolex’s helium escape valve was not patented. This marking determines the vintage rarity of the model. When the patent was approved then the case back was marked with “Rolex Patent”.

Great White: The Great White name comes from the changing in marking colours which became white from red. This happened with the new Ref. 1665 having a production time from 1977 till 1983 came out.
Comex: The French company that pioneered saturation diving was named “Compagnie Maritime d’Expertise”, also known as Comex. This Comex marked watch came when the French company commissioned a Rolex Sea-Dweller watch for their deep diving experiments. The Rolex marked the company name “comex” on the dial to be separated from regularly sold models. Now these models are extremely rare and few consider it to be not worn collectors’ timepieces. The commissioned watches were made in Ref. 1665 (Great White), 16600 and 16660.
Gas Escape Valve: The famous gas escape valve was patented by Rolex for its diving watches. To be specific it is a helium gas filled escape valve. The valve is used when the diver descends deep the trap helium is released by a valve to maintain the internal pressure of the watch, so it functions properly.

Types of Watch Movement and its Importance!

What is a Watch Movement?

If explained in simple words a watch is powered by a movement but it is not as simple as it seems. A movement is actually the heart of any analogue watch, regardless to its price or brand.

There are several manufacturers that produce movements for their own watches and some not only produce for their own watch line-up but also sell to other watch manufacturers.

A Swiss automatic watch movement is also referred to as calibre which is a bit different from quartz movement. We will get into the types of and working of the watch movements later, let’s first understand the movement and its importance.

The movements can be separated by its functionality. Some watches only have time, some have time and date, some have day-date and time while some have chronograph functions in it. All the movements get complex with increased functions it has to maintain.

The renowned and widely used watch movements are Swiss or Japanese produced movements. Few of the Swiss luxury watches brands use their own manufactured movements to maintain its quality, precision and exclusivity. The mass producers of Swiss watch movements are ETA, Sellita and Ronda. On the other hand Seiko and Casio mass produce watch movements in Japan.

Most watch buyers get attracted by the appearance of the timepieces but few really get into the quality and precision of watch movements. As the external design is important for the watch, the internal mechanism is also equally important.

Quartz Movement

Quartz Movement is a battery powered movement that runs the clock. The first ever Quartz Movement was introduced in 1969 by Seiko, Japan. It was a revolution in the watch industry. With the introduction of the quartz movement the traditional watchmakers felt challenged. As the quartz movement was cheaper to produce and maintain due to less moving parts, the Swiss watch makers created their own version of quartz movement. This all together created a new era of quartz watches in the world.

Currently the mass producers of quartz movements are Seiko, Citizen and Casio, these Japanese companies also provide quartz movements to other watch manufacturers. The Swiss quartz movements are majorly produced by ETA, Sellita and Ronda

Diving a bit into quartz technology, the movement is powered by a battery. The battery sends an electrical pulse through a piece of quartz crystal. The electrical pulse sent through the crystal generates a vibration of 32768/sec which in terms keeps the movement oscillator moving.

Benefits of Quartz Movement:

  •         As the quartz movement has fewer moving parts than mechanical movement, it is durable and easy to maintain. While the battery power helps to reduce the number of parts.
  •         Quartz watches are battery powered so there is no need of manual watch winding or human interaction.
  •         The quartz movement has proved to be high in accuracy and barely varies time.
  •         In contrast to mechanical movements, quartz movements need lesser labour hours to produce and with reduced number of parts it is cheaper to produce.

Mechanical Movement

Watch collectors and enthusiasts have a different approach while buying a watch. Most watch collectors prefer to make watch purchases that have mechanical movement.

Since the start mechanical movements have powered all the types of watches which proves it to be reliable and durable for longer uses. However it comes to one’s personal choice when choosing a timepiece based on mechanical movements.

The mechanical movement is powered by a winding spring that has to be winded manually. The wearer has to wind it manually through the watch crown. The energy restored in the spring is then released to power the movement and ticking the clock.

As a matter of fact, there is not much difference between the quartz movement and mechanical movement. Only the battery in quartz movement is replaced by spring motion. Few more springs are added to mechanical movements that maintain other clock features.

However, a mechanical movement is more of a class sentiment as it takes intense effort and quality artistry to make one mechanical movement, which also makes it expensive.

The winding spring at the heart of mechanical movement stores kinetic energy that in return powers several gears and related springs for timekeeping.

Benefits of Mechanical Movement:

  •         As the mechanical movement needs quality and intense precision to build one, it really lasts a lifetime if properly taken care of.
  •         Due to its spring base power movement there is no need for batteries or battery replacement. The spring can be manually winded and you are good to go for days.
  •         The intrigue of moving parts makes it fascinating to watch the artistry put in the movement manufacturing. For this many watchmakers put a sapphire case back to show the intensive mechanical creativity.

Automatic Movement

Automatic Movement as it refers is basically a self-winding mechanical movement which restores kinetic energy into the spring by the wrist motion of the wearer. The effort of manual winding is eliminated with its automatic functionality.

Among the watch collectors an automatic watch is considered of high value with definite quality. Both Swiss and Japanese movement manufacturers produce their own automatic movements.  Same as mechanical movement it is also complex in structure and an added metal weight that freely moves with wrist movement, it makes it interesting to see it too.

Benefits of Automatic Movement:

  •         The self-winding mechanism makes it easy for daily use. As one does not have to manually wind it.
  •         Likewise mechanical movements it is built with high-quality parts and extreme precision so it tends to last a lifetime.
